Overview The Fleet Maintenance Manager is responsible for the management of fleet equipment at one or more locations and leading a team of technicians who perform preventive maintenance and repair of a fleet of up to 60 vehicles (diesel and alternative fuel). Additional responsibilities may include maintenance of equipment and machinery at post collection facilities and management of container shops. The Fleet Maintenance Manager provides direction to technicians to ensure repairs and maintenance on equipment, including trucks, containers, and other heavy-duty equipment, are performed in compliance with the Company’s safety and maintenance standards and all federal and state regulations. The role involves planning and scheduling repair work to ensure safety, timeliness, and reduced downtime in the shop. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES Provide direction to all technician levels, including lead technicians, in the maintenance shop and may manage a Fleet Maintenance Supervisor in a satellite shop or on another shift to ensure safe, efficient, and timely repair and maintenance work. Oversee planning and scheduling of all repair work to increase productivity and manage overtime. Monitor shop performance and implement procedures to improve efficiencies. Report to management on shop performance and implement changes as needed. Manage lead technicians and maintenance supervisors, including overseeing daily shop huddles and fleet walks; coach and counsel staff on performance and corrective action when necessary; participate in hiring and termination decisions with Human Resources and management; oversee training and performance evaluation; evaluate and approve merit increases, promotions, and job changes as appropriate. Maintain an ongoing preventive maintenance program for assigned locations. Identify trends in road calls and breakdowns; oversee maintenance of facilities on site; control maintenance costs related to personnel, purchasing, inventory, and outsourcing of repairs. Manage outside repair facilities to ensure work is completed in accordance with safety and compliance procedures and regulations; follow up as needed. Identify training opportunities and document issues, discussing corrective action with maintenance supervision when necessary. Conduct Quality Control inspections, track issues, and ensure resolution to ensure all work meets safety and compliance standards and regulations. Maintain advanced knowledge of engine, emission systems, transmission, brake, hydraulic, and electrical systems to manage preventive and repair maintenance of heavy equipment and vehicles on site and on the road, including: engine chassis repair and maintenance; vehicle body control systems with hydraulics and electrical systems; heating and air conditioning systems; welding tools for heavy equipment; and related administrative matters for the team, including payroll, employee records, maintenance records, and documentation in Dossier Maintenance Software. Prepare and submit budget for approval; set departmental goals aligned with division leadership. Local travel may be required.
