As a Senior Agentic AI SW Engineer , you will be the founding member of a new initiative to revolutionize our engineering organization by leveraging autonomous and semi-autonomous AI agents. Your mission is to design, build, and deploy intelligent systems that will redefine productivity, accelerate new product development, and serve as the foundation for our next generation of AI-enabled products.

You will design, orchestrate, and productionize a system of cooperating GenAI agents that accelerates our engineering — planning, development, testing, quality, and release — while meeting our reliability, safety, and cost targets.

You will be a hands-on technical leader, architecting solutions that range from expert systems that augment our engineers' abilities to fully autonomous multi-agent teams that can deliver entire software projects. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of AI at Zebra and drive a strategic transformation with executive visibility.

This role involves integrating advanced AI technologies into scalable, production-grade software systems, blending full stack development with the creation of intelligent, autonomous AI agents. The focus is on enhancing business processes and product capabilities by applying rigorous software engineering principles, such as system reliability, maintainability, and performance optimization. The position requires transforming AI innovations into practical solutions, ensuring seamless integration into existing architectures while advancing the organization’s AI-driven capabilities.

This role is a hybrid position and requires a minimum of three days per week in the office. Your work location can be either Holtsville, NY or Mississauga, ON. Zebra reserves the right to modify your work location based on business need.

• Architect & Build Foundational Agentic Systems: Lead the design and implementation of scalable, production-grade AI agent systems. This includes developing everything from single-purpose agents to complex, multi-agent collaborative frameworks.
• Develop the "Digital Veteran" Agent: Realize the vision of an AI agent trained on the collective wisdom of our most experienced engineers. This agent will be integrated into our New Product Development playbooks to review designs, check for compliance, and provide expert-level feedback to our hardware and software engineers.
• Orchestrate AI-Enabled Project Teams: Spearhead the development of a multi-agent system where specialized agents (e.g., code developer, tester, QA, release manager) collaborate autonomously to deliver small-scale software products.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to define requirements for complex AI and software systems, prioritizing features that address key business needs.
• Participate in design and architecture discussion in building scalable and maintainable software solutions that integrate AI technologies such as machine learning models, natural language processing (NLP), or computer vision.
• Build, test, deploy, and maintain software and AI systems, ensuring high performance, security, and scalability.
• Own a module/function development and deployment of intelligent agent systems, including single-purpose and multi-agent frameworks.
• Implement AI model pipelines, integrating data preprocessing, training, and inference into software systems.
• Conduct rigorous testing of AI models and software to ensure reliability, accuracy, and compliance with business requirements.
• Evaluate AI systems using performance metrics (e.g., precision, recall, F1 score) and refine models as needed.
• Create and maintain detailed documentation for software architecture, AI models, APIs, and user interfaces.
• Participate in code reviews and AI model evaluations to ensure quality and consistency across projects.
• Stay up to date with the latest AI and software development tools, frameworks, and technologies, applying them to drive innovation in new solutions.
• Mentor junior engineers, fostering best practices in software development and AI model implementation.
• Network with internal and external experts to share knowledge and explore collaboration opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent of 3+ years of practical experience gained through industry roles, professional experience, or applied AI software development.
• 5+ years of professional software/AI development experience, or an advanced degree and equivalent experience, including at least 2-3 years of practical exposure to AI/ML systems, frameworks, or AI-enabled applications (i.e. model integration, intelligent automation, cloud-based AI services, or equivalent applied work).
• Strong proficiency in Python and hands-on experience with modern AI frameworks and libraries (e.g., LlamaIndex, AutoGen, OpenAI APIs, TensorFlow/PyTorch, LangChain, Hugging Face).
• Demonstrable experience or deep theoretical understanding of AI agent architectures, including concepts like planning, tool use, reasoning, and memory.
• Experience with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and integrating AI systems with vector databases and other knowledge sources.
• Excellent systems design and architecture skills, with the ability to build scalable, reliable, and secure enterprise-grade applications.
• Experience developing or contributing to multi-agent systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with ADK (Agent Development Kit) is highly desired.
• Familiarity with MLOps and deploying AI/ML models in a cloud environment (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure).
• Experience integrating AI solutions with enterprise tools and APIs.  

Key Skills and Competencies

• A pragmatic, "builder" mindset with a passion for rapid prototyping and iterative development.
• Strong understanding of software engineering principles (e.g., system design, version control, CI/CD pipelines).
• Experience with AI model development and deployment in production environments.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to tackle complex challenges at the intersection of software and AI.
• Knowledge of NLP, computer vision, or reinforcement learning.
• Familiarity with multi-agent systems and distributed AI frameworks.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Salary: USD 94900.00 - USD 142300.00 Yearly

Salary offered will vary depending on your location, job-related skills, knowledge, and experience.
Additionally, all Zebra roles are eligible for cash incentive programs. For example, sales roles have additional opportunity to earn substantial variable compensation tied to quota achievement.
